ISEAIM 2021- 1st International Symposium on Evidence-based Artificial Intelligence and Medicine

Sponsored and hosted by Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (z6首页), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and The University of Edinburgh, the ISEAIM 2021 brings together AI and medical experts from the z6首页 in Shenzhen and other institutes in the Guangdong Greater Bay Area including Hong Kong and Macao, cosmopolitan cities in China including Beijing, Boao, Chengdu, and Shanghai, international cities in the United Kingdom including Edinburgh, London, and Southampton, and the rest of the world to review the recent advances and nourish substantial collaborations in evidence-based AI and medicine. This symposium will cover virtually all areas of AI and medicine that can apply evidence-based research methods to facilitate the analysis, assessment, and synthesis of new and better evidence for improving healthcare.

    Data-driven rehabilitation and assistive technology

    Prof ANG Wei Tech graduated with a PhD degree in Robotics from the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, USA in 2004, and M.Eng. and B.Eng. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from NTU in 1999 and 1997 respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, NTU, and concurrently as the Executive Director of the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore, a joint collaboration by NTU, A*STAR and National Healthcare Group.

    Prof ANG's research focuses on robotics technology for biomedical applications, which include surgery, cell micromanipulation, rehabilitation and assistive technology. His work has been well funded, published and cited, and resulted in several inventions licensed to the industry and spin-off companies.

    XAI early gastric cancer detection using swarm intelligence marker-based watershed segmentation algorithm and evolving graph convolutional network

    Simon Fong graduated from La Trobe University, Australia, with a 1st Class Honour BEng. Computer Systems degree and a PhD. Computer Science degree in 1993 and 1998 respectively. Simon is now working as an Associate Professor at the Computer and Information Science Department of the University of Macau. He is a co-founder of the Data Analytics and Collaborative Computing Research Group in the Faculty of Science and Technology. Prior to his academic career, Simon took up various managerial and technical posts, such as systems engineer, IT consultant and e-commerce director in Australia and Asia. Dr. Fong has published over 500 international conference and peer-reviewed journal papers, mostly in the areas of data mining, data stream mining, e-health, meta-heuristics optimization algorithms, and their applications. He serves on the editorial boards of the IEEE JSAC Journal, IEEE IT Professional Magazine, and various special issues of SCIE-indexed journals. Simon is also an active researcher with leading positions such as Vice-Chair of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Task Force on Business Intelligence & Knowledge Management, Vice-President of Overseas Chinese International Biomedical Engineering Society, and Vice-Director of International Consortium for Optimization and Modelling in Science and Industry (iCOMSI).

    Jianwei Huang is a Presidential Chair Professor and the Associate Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is also the Vice President of the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society. He has been an IEEE Fellow, a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Communications Society, and a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science. He received the PhD degree from Northwestern University (USA) in 2005, worked as a Postdoc Research Associate at Princeton University (USA) during 2005-2007, and worked as Assistant/Associate/Full Professor at the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during 2007 – 2018.

    Dr. Huang has long focused on pioneering research at the intersection of network optimization, network economics and crowd intelligence, and he has published 300+ papers in leading international journals and conferences, with a total Google Scholar citations of 14000+. He is the co-author of 9 Best Paper Awards, including the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications in 2011. He has co-authored seven books, including the textbook of "Wireless Network Pricing." He received the Chinese University of Hong Kong Young Researcher Award in 2014 and IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2009.

    Dr. Huang is currently the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering (JCR Q1). He has served as an Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Cognitive Radio Series, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking. He has served as an Editor of Wiley Information and Communication Technology Series, Springer Encyclopedia of Wireless Networks, and Springer Handbook of Cognitive Radio. He has served as the Chair of IEEE Communications Society Cognitive Network Technical Committee and Multimedia Communications Technical Committee.     Prof. Siu-wai Leung is a Research Scientist at the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (z6首页) and Director of the Edinburgh Bayes Centre for AI Research in Shenzhen (in preparation). He did PhD in artificial intelligence at the University of Edinburgh, under supervision of Prof. David Robertson, and MPhil in biochemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was elected Fellow of Royal Society of Biology (a federation comprising major biomedical societies in the UK) and Fellow of Royal Society for Public Health. Before joining the z6首页, he was a PI at the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, University of Macau, to conduct evidence-based genomics medicine research into early diagnosis and therapy of complex diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. In Macao, he also served as the Vice-President of the Macau Pharmacology Association and the Vice-President of the Computational Pharmacy Society. He was the founding Executive Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Medicine, a BioMed Central journal, to get the journal indexed by SCI-E and JCR. He was an invited plenary speaker and panelist of the conferences organized by Springer Nature, Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and World Congress on Research Integrity (WCRI). Before his PhD study in Edinburgh, he was Acting Head of the Chinese Medicine Informatics Centre at the Hong Kong Baptist University, and Head of Data Processing (China) at Nielsen, the world’s leading market research firm.

    Robotic haptic sensing and interaction for surgery

    Prof Hongbin Liu is a Professor at Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Reader in Medical Robotics at Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, King’s College London (KCL) where he is directing the Haptic Mechatronics and Medical Robotics (HaMMeR) Laboratory. Dr. Liu obtained his BEng in 2005 from Northwestern Polytechnical University, China, MSc and PhD in 2006 and 2010 respectively, both from the Division of Engineering, KCL. He is a member of the IEEE, and a Technical Committee Member of IEEE EMBS BioRobotics. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications at top international robotic journals and conferences and is inventor for 6 patents. His research has been funded by EPSRC, Innovate UK, NHS Trust and EU Commissions. His current research focuses on developing soft robotic systems for assistive minimally invasive surgical interventions, with strong collaborations from IBM and Ericsson.

    AI in evidence-based medicine

    Jianping Liu is a Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and the Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Chinese Medicine at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Prof Liu is a Director of Cochrane China Network Affiliate (BUCM), Director of Clinical Epidemiology Unit under INCLEN, and Co-Director of Beijing GRADE Centre. He is an advisor for traditional medicine for the World Health Organization (WHO), and a Chang Jiang Scholar Professor (awarded by the Ministry of Education, China). He has been a part-time Senior Researcher at the National Research Center in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM), at the Arctic University of Norway since 2003, and an Adjunct Professor of the University of Western Sydney. He is the former President of the International Society for Complementary Medicine Research (ISCMR). He is a Member of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field Advisory Board and former Chair of the Evidence-based Medicine Committee under the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine. Dr Liu was awarded more than 30 grants from international, national, and regional bodies for research in TCM and integrative medicine. He has authored 10 books, co-authored 8, and published more than 540 papers in both international and Chinese peer review journals.

    New reporting standards for AI clinical studies

    Dr Xiao Liu is an ophthalmologist and a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. She is interested in clinical evaluation and implementation of AI medical devices to improve patient care safely and effectively. Dr Liu co-led SPIRIT-AI and CONSORT-AI - the first international reporting standards for clinical trials of AI interventions and is working with UK national bodies such as NICE, MHRA and the NIHR/NHSx AI in Health and Care Award, as well as international bodies such as the WHO/ITU Working groups for AI in Health to develop standards for AI in healthcare.

    Status and trends of AI in TCM research

    Chunli Lu, Medical (Science) PhD, studying in Centre for Evidence-based Chinese medicine, Beijing University of Chinese medicine. She majors in evidence-based Chinese medicine and won the National Scholarships due to her excellent work. She also won the scholarship for visiting scholar to Southampton University sponsored by China Scholarship Council.     Dr.Ma is the reviewer of several international journals, including the Associate Editor of Clinical Medicine Insights: Oncology, Editorial Member of Oral Oncology, Editorial Member of Frontiers in Oncology (IF:4.42), Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board Member of Imaging Journal, Editor-in-Chief of Special Issue of Frontiers in Immuology (IF:5.3) and more than 10 of other international journals.

    Dr.Ma has extensive experience in tumor transcriptomics and bioinformatics, as well as in the new methods for tumor diagnosis and the medical application of artificial intelligence recognition technology. He is responsible for 1 national natural science fund, 1 provincial key project, and several departmental funds. Dr.Ma has published more than 140 SCI articles as the corresponding author, including Int J Cancer, Cell Death & Disease, MoL Cancer, Life Science, etc. The articles have been cited more than 3000 times, and several works have been cited by NCCN, Wfumb Guidelines, The EFSUMB Guidelines and other international professional guidelines for more than 10 times.Dr.Ma has applied for more than 10 invention patents (2 have been approved) and more than 10 software patents (6 have been approved). He has also participated in the editing of Medical English Writing (associate editor), Clinical Oncology and other textbooks.

    Internet of prostheses: A viable approach towards creating evidence

    Kia Nazarpour is Reader in Biomedical Artificial Intelligence at School of Informatics, The University of Edinburgh. His research is motivated by the potential of technology to restore function to individuals with disability. He currently leads a team of six research associates and several PhD students. Dr Nazarpour has received circa ?8m funding from various sources and currently has active projects funded by EPSRC, NIHR, EU H2020, and ESRC, including an EPSRC Healthcare Technology Challenge Award, (?1m, 2018-2023). He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles. His research is broadly disseminated across science and technology hubs, as indicated by +50 talk invitations. His work has received many awards, including the 

    UNESCO Netexplo 2018 award with citation “one of the most promising digital innovations with impact on society and business”. He is Founding Director of Edinburgh Neuroprosthetics Laboratory.

    Xueping Quan, Senior VP and CIO of Shanghai Tongshu Biotechnology Ltd. With a PhD degree and postdoctoral experiences from the University of Edinburgh, King’s College London, and the Imperial College London, she focus on the innovation and application of bioinformatics and artificial intelligence techniques in the field of precision medicine and translational medicine.     Keynote Speech

    Prof. Dave Robertson holds a Personal Chair in Applied Logic within the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a Vice Principal (Pro VC) and Head of the University’s College of Science & Engineering. Prior to this he was Head of School of Informatics at Edinburgh, which is the largest UK computing science department in the UK in terms of research power. His computing research is on Artificial Intelligence, specialising in formal methods for coordination and knowledge sharing between (human/artificial) agents in distributed systems where a high degree of autonomy is expected in the components of the underlying system. This is one of the enablers for AI at large scale. Methods from his group have been applied to astronomy, simulation of consumer behaviour, emergency response and healthcare. He was a member of the Farr Institute for medical data sharing and was co-director of the Centre for Medical Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently a co-director of the Edinburgh node of Health Data Research UK. He chaired the executive of the UK Computing Research Committee (the expert panel of the British Computer Society and the Institution of Engineering and Technology) and has served on strategic advisory groups for the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Medical Research Council and Innovate UK. He is a member of the governance board for the Scottish Innovation Centre in Data Science and was on the supervisory board for EIT Digital (a leading European digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organisation) and is a Fellow of the European Alliance for Innovation.

    Modelling patient networks in autism spectrum disorder

    Dr Ian Simpson is a Reader in Biological Informatics. Originally trained in Biochemistry & Genetics he has spent over 20 years studying brain development and function at the molecular level. He has developed novel methodologies and tools to analyse developmental expression data using graphical, dynamic, and evolutionary models. His main research interests lie at the boundary between Informatics and Biomedicine and focus on jointly modelling molecular and clinical data in diseases with developmental origins such as autism spectrum disorder. He was elected a member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland in 2014.

    Thanasis studied Engineering and completed a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Oxford (2012). He worked at the University of Oxford as a Research Fellow in Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics (2012-2016), Stipendiary Lecturer in Engineering Science (2014-2016), and Lecturer in Statistical Research Methods (2016-2019). He is currently an Associate Professor in Data Science at the Usher Institute, Edinburgh Medical School, University of Edinburgh, where he leads the Data Analytics Research and Technology in Healthcare (DARTH) group and is a Co-Director of the Telescot group. He is a Co-founder of the NHS Digital Academy leadership programme, where he leads the development and delivery of 'Clinical Decision Support and Actionable Data Analytics'. He received the Andrew Goudie award (top PhD student across all disciplines, St. Cross College, University of Oxford, 2011), the EPSRC Doctoral Prize award (2012), the young scientist award (MAVEBA, 2013), the EPSRC Statistics and Machine Learning award (2015), and the BIOSTEC/Biosignals Best paper award (2021). He won a ‘Best reviewer award’ from the IEEE Journal of Biomedical Health Informatics, and the ‘Outstanding Reviewer’ award from the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine. He sits on the Editorial Boards of JMIR Mental Health; JMIR mHealth and uHealth; and Frontiers in Neurology. His research work has been highlighted in the media including Reuters, and has been commercially explored by industrial partners including by Intel Corporation. Thanasis is a Senior Member of IEEE, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

    Professor Martin C. S. Wong is a specialist in Family Medicine and a researcher in the field of cancer screening and prevention of chronic diseases. Professor Wong has composed over three hundred publications in international peer-reviewed journals, and received over 15 research awards for studies in his research area, including the prestigious “1st Distinguished Research Making Family Medicine Shine Award” by the World Organization of Family Doctors in 2018. He is the Co-Chair of the NCD stream of APRU Global Health Programme; Co-Chairman of the Grant Review Board, Health and Medical Research Fund, Food and Health Bureau (FHB); the Chairman of the Advisory Group on Hong Kong Reference Frameworks in Primary Care Settings; a member of the Expert Advisory Panel in Implementation Science of the HKSAR government, and a member of the Research Council of the FHB. He is a reviewer of the Medical Research Council (MRC), United Kingdom; expert reviewer of the National Medical Research Council (NMRC), Singapore; external examiners of doctoral thesis in various Universities; and an external reviewer of the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme, Research Grant Council (RGC) of Hong Kong.     Derive insights from health data using knowledge graph technologies

    Dr Honghan Wu is an associate professor in health informatics at Institute of Health Informatics, University College London, UK and holds a Rutherford Fellowship funded by Medical Research Council UK. Dr Wu leads a health informatics group (https://knowlab.github.io/). He co-founded and co-leads Edinburgh Clinical Natural Language Processing Group (https://www.ed.ac.uk/usher/clinical-natural-language-processing). He has a PhD in computing science and his current research interest is in using text technologies and Knowledge Graph techniques to analyse electronic health records (EHRs) to support decision making for tailored care, trial recruitment and research.

    Dr Wu works closely with National Health Service Trusts (England) and Health Boards (Scotland) across the UK to use artificial intelligence technologies in supporting research and health service improvement. Teaming up with clinicians and other health professionals, he is applying above-mentioned technologies in tackling challenges in managing and treating mental disorders, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Recently, he focuses on clusters of diseases (multimorbidity), particularly in elderlies.

    Jeremy C WYATT
    Emeritus Professor of Digital Healthcare and former Director, Wessex Institute, University of Southampton
    How can the global “Mobilising Computable Biomedical Knowledge” (MCBK) movement support evidence-based medicine?

    Until 2019 Jeremy was Professor of Digital Healthcare, Director of the Wessex Institute, and Clinical Adviser on New Technologies to Royal College of Physicians. He now chairs the AI Special Interest Group for the UK Faculty of Clinical Informatics, advises the NHSX AI Lab on evaluation methods and is a member of Medicines & Healthcare Regulatory Authority’s Devices Expert Advisory Committee. His research uses empirical studies to uncover scientific principles guiding the design of clinical information and eHealth systems, such as interactive tools to influence behaviour of clinician (eg. decision support), patients (eg. apps) and the public, and digital tools to support health research.

    Jeremy trained in medicine in Oxford and London and as a hospital physician there & Glasgow (MRCP 1983). During doctoral training at the National Heart & Lung Institute and an MRC-funded postdoc at Stanford he discovered medical informatics and technology assessment. He is a Founding Member of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (2017) and was the UK’s first elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (1997) and has given 40 invited overseas talks in the last decade.

    Main achievements

    Jeremy was an early convert to EBM, writing the 1991 Lancet articles on medical knowledge that prompted the June 1992 McMaster meeting which established the Cochrane Collaboration. He also set up Cochrane’s Effective Practice & Organization of Care review group in 1994. He has written three textbooks on evaluation methods and eHealth, five series of tutorial articles for medical journals and over 200 articles.

    The 4th generation Nanopore? sequencing platform development and application of pathogen accurate detection

    As a senior (professor level) engineer, he studied with academician of Royal Academy of Engineering of UK and obtained doctor's degree and postdoctoral degree in the field of bioinformatics and machine learning. He is a senior research scientist of Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, the birthplace of the first clone sheep in the world ‘Dolly’. He was youth Principal Investigator, awarded the title of "SULSA LEADERS" by Royal Academy of Sciences of Scotland and was once a chief scientist and senior executive of world top 500 enterprises. And undertook and participated in a number of national key R & D programs.

    In 2019, Dr. Le Yu founded Beijing ProtoDNA Genetech Co. Ltd., which developed a new infectious pathogen diagnosis integrated detection platform and data service system. This two-dimensional pathogen real-time accurate detection, is of great significance for clinical diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.  He has been awarded the title of "overseas high-level talents" in Beijing and class A leading talents in Suzhou and Foshan, published SCI articles and registered more than 100 intellectual property rights.
