The heart completes a complex set of tasks, including the initiation or propagation of an electrical signal with regularity (proper heart rate and rhythm), and generating sufficient force of contraction (contractility). In the heart, gap junctional intercellular communication is a critical part of cellular activities and is necessary for electrical propagation and mechanical diffusion among neighboring cardio myocytes. Disorders of gap junctions are a major cause for cardiac diseases such as ventricular arrhythmia. This talk will introduce the micro devices, robotic systems, and new techniques we have recently developed for automated measurement of the diffusion and conduction functions of gap junctions, and for continuous, long-term measurement of contractility, beating rate, and beating rhythm of hiPS-cardiomyocytes. Drug testing results using these new instruments and techniques will also be discussed.

    Yu Sun
    IEEE Fellow; Professor, University of Toronto; Fellow of CAE; Fellow of RSC

    Yu Sun is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, with joint appointments in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto (UofT). He is a Tier I Canada Research Chair and the Director of the UofT Robotics Institute. His lab specializes in developing innovative technologies and instruments for manipulating and characterizing cells, molecules, and nanomaterials. He is a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) and a Fellow of The Academy of Science of Royal Society of Canada (RSC).

    He was also elected Fellow of IEEE, ASME, AIMBE, AAAS, NAI, CSME, and EIC for his work on micro-nano devices and robotic systems.
